RE: Girl names I want to Date before I die :-)

Except Jennifer, which peaked in the early 70s, all of these names peaked in popularity in the early 90s or the 40s. So, apparently you want some 16-year-olds and 60-year-olds. :)

And yeah, I can think of a couple of dangerous Melissas.

I've known a total of two Melissas: one was my ex-fiancee's 13-year old daughter (also known as "The Antichrist") and the other was a friend's girlfriend. The girlfriend was kinda cute (if you could get past the fact that she had no chin) and a gamer as well, but the biggest know-it-all we had ever met. She was highly entertaining, if only because we all (except for Rob, the friend in question) enjoyed egging her on and seeing how ticked off we could get her. The night wasn't completely if we couldn't get her to the point of screaming and yelling at one or more of us.

Frighteningly, one of the dangerous Melissas I know is a girlfriend of a Rob. Definitely not the same couple you're talking about, but I think this proves that any Rob-Melissa couple is doubly dangerous.

Despite making fun of your choices, there was something very cute about all of the young women in northern Europe having names that sound like old-lady names in America. OK, not all of them--there are plenty of Steffies and Lisas and 30 variations on Christine and Katherine, just like in America. But there are also Beatrice/Beatrix, Hannah, Ines, Ingrid, Madeline, and Margret/Margarethe, all of which sound like people who'd hang out with my grandmother, but were actually attractive women in their early 20s.

Gosh, it must be a coincidence. You certainly couldn't be one of the dangerous Melissas I was referring to.

PS, you're cute when you're angry. :P

And she would laugh at you, Phil (and rightly so), because the number is actually 867-5309.

Or maybe everyone will laugh at both of us because we're old enough to remember it.

Oh yeah, she'll love that, Phil. Unless you actually _did_ get her number off a bathroom wall.

From my experience: If you date a girl named Candy, don't sing Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side." (I'm guessing Holly would be even worse.) For some reason, girlfriends named Ann are not thrilled with Iris's "Annie Would I Lie to You?"--a song that promises you will be unfaithful does not inspire faith.

However, if you meet a girl named Claire who named her poodle Lorraine and introduced herself with a line from "Song for a Future Generation," you should _definitely_ sing the B-52s' "Planet Claire" to her. But it might not work as well with other Claires.

How about Sonic Youth's "Mildred Pierce"? It's one of their first songs (and the first one in standard guitar tunings). Inspired of course by the Joan Crawford movie of the same name, it's basically just Thurston yelling "Mildred! Mildred Pierce! Nooooo!" and so on over the usual early-SY noisy guitars.

My friend married a Lizbeth, who once slapped me for calling her Liz. I also dated a Betsy who would have killed me if I called her any of those names, but Bets and Bette were fine. And I later dated an Elizabeth who wouldn't let me shorten it to anything other than E. And I had a friend named Elspeth, which her mother thought was a really creative alternative.

I think that was Ready for the World, or one of those bands I can't stand who sound like that.

Most other songs I can think of about Sheilas are by goth bands, or at least gloomy bands. 45 Grave's "Sheila", Rosetta Stone's "Sheila", The Tear Garden's "Sheila Liked the Rodeo," The Smiths' "Sheila Take a Bow," Smashing Pumpkins' "To Sheila"....

The only exception I can think of is Modern Talking's "Sweet Little Sheila," and even that was the sad ballad on an album full of upbeat eurodisco.

I'm sure it's not your mother's fault.:)
